  • A dermatologist explains the best way to heal a painful sunburn quickly.

Even when you have the best of intentions, sunburns can happen. Chris Pratt knows the deal, because he just showed off a painful-looking burn on social media that he got during a recent Hawaiian vacation.

"Suns out guns out," he captioned an Instagram photo of his red back, which contrasts heavily with his bare pale butt. "I might have got a toouuuch crispy on the honeymoon. #Aloe."

Of course, most people were quick to post funny comments regarding his physique, rather than the actual burn. "Can we see the front? For medical purposes of course," one commenter wrote. "More like suns out buns out," said another.

But others still wanted to point out that a burn isn't something to mess around with. "Use SUNSCREEN!!!!! I've had basal cell carcinoma and $20K later a new nose—skin cancer kills! Stop ruining your skin and protect it people!!" one person wrote.

Pratt is hardly the first person to have to deal with this. But, what are you supposed to do when it happens to you?

How should you treat a sunburn?

If you happen to get fried in the sun like Pratt, you'll want to do your best to avoid getting any more sun where you were burned, says Gary Goldenberg, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. Then, apply cold, wet towels to the burn to help cool off your skin.

Since you actually have roasted your skin, Dr. Goldenberg recommends loading up on "as much moisturizer as possible." While pure aloe vera gel has "some healing power," Dr. Goldenberg says that the type you can usually find in your local drugstore doesn't tend to contain a lot of the real stuff. That's why he recommends reaching for a thick moisturizer like Aquaphor or Cerave Healing Ointment.

In the next few days after your burn, keep avoiding the sun as much as you can, Dr. Goldenberg says. If your skin starts to peel, resist the temptation to pull off a few pieces yourself. "Let it happen naturally," Dr. Goldenberg says. And, if you have any raw skin patches, apply a topical antibiotic, like Neosporin, to the area.

At what point should you see a doctor?

If your sunburn is severe or you develop a fever after your sunburn, see a doctor ASAP. They'll likely prescribe you topical or oral steroids to help heal your skin faster, Dr. Goldenberg says.

And, of course, the best way to avoid dealing with all of this is to do your best to prevent a sunburn in the first place. So, wear broad spectrum sunscreen (minimum of SPF 30!) regularly and reapply it religiously (at least every two hours). And, if shade is available, use it. Getting "crispy" might make for a funny Instagram photo, but it's definitely not great for your skin!
