There's a Special Meaning Behind Carson Daly's 10 Tattoos

Whether he's hosting NBC's The Voice or Today's Orange Room, Carson Daly almost always has a mic in his hand—so you may have noticed the multitude of tats sprawled across his arms.

While Daly keeps his tattoos hidden beneath his suits for the most part, he's showed them off and has opened up about their meanings in the past. Apparently, the host is very strategic about how and why he inks up his body. "All of mine mean something," he recently told David Feherty in an interview for the Golf Channel.

"I want it to be timeless—something where you look at it in 30 years and you're not embarrassed by what you have," Carson told Today in 2014. "I'm a family-first kind of guy, so everything on my body is really about my family."

As expected, many of Daly's tattoos pay tribute to his wife and three kids, as well as other milestones in his life. Here are the stories behind some of Carson Daly's tattoos.

1. Corvette Hood Ornament

His first tattoo paid tribute to his father, James Daly, who was a Corvette dealer and passed away when the host was 5. "The tattoo is designed after a hood ornament of a 1977 Corvette that he left me," Daly told Today. "I actually have the car that it's designed for. I wanted a nice memento for my father without it being too somber."

    2. Green Beret

At the top of Daly's left bicep, you'll find Daly's favorite tattoo: the green beret. " My grandfather, my mom's father, was a green beret in the Army special forces," the host told Today. "And this is from his actual green beret that he left me." The text, "de oppresso liber," is Latin for "to free the oppressed," which is the motto of the United States Army Special Forces.

    3. 456

Many do not know that, before he was a famous television host, Daly was an aspiring DJ. On his calf is a tattoo that reads "456," a tribute to his love of music. "456 is the logo of a record label I had in New York City and it just reminds me of that time in New York and my love of music," he told Today. "So it's just a reminder of really everything I'm about. 456 is a street dice game and it's a hip-hop label, so that's where we got 456. I don't have the label anymore."

    4. Curly Shark

On Daly's left forearm is a replica of the bright yellow Cutty Shark whiskey label. "It's a homage to my step dad who is like my father," Daly told Today. "Cutty Sark is my step dad's favorite drink. It's a famous, old-school whiskey. It's like the Old Spice of whiskeys, it's just been around forever. His nickname is Curly, so I changed it from Cutty Sark to Curly Sark. And instead of 'Original Scotts Whisky,' I wrote 'Original Pops Whisky.'"

    5. Jaden Patricia

Right next to Curly Shark you'll find the name "Jaden Patricia" written in big cursive letters. His niece is named Jaden Patricia, after his sister Jaden and his mother Patricia.

    6. 9/11

His other forearm has a red, white, and blue "NYC" scripted in bold font. He got it the day after September 11 in New York City, after watching the Twin Towers fall and having to evacuate MTV in Times Square due to a bomb threat. "As we were trying to figure out if we'd be on the air, I was kind of aimlessly walking around New York...it was really weird," he said to Today. "So I went to my tattoo shop and sat there listening to music and ended up having him put that on me as a sign of pride for being a New Yorker."

    7. One-Eyed Jack

On Daly's upper arm, you'll find a tribute to his son, Jack Daly, that he actually designed himself. "That's a one-eyed Jack playing card being pierced by an actual jack from the game Jacks," he told Today. "My son was born on March 15, which is the Ides of March, so there's the reference to that. I put at the bottom there a little Pisces, which is his sign." To the left of the playing card, you'll also find an American flag."I wanted a lot of Americana references."

    8. Leo the Lion

Daly, slowly but surely, has inked up to have a full sleeve of tats on his arms. On his lower arms are two fierce lions with a rose in its mane. "I wanted a symbol of strength for my daughters," he told Feherty. "I want them to be strong women, so I opted to put an image of the most courageous symbol of strength I could find." The flower honors his daughter London Rose and his grandmother, also named Rose.

    9. Wonder Woman

Daly also got a tattoo to honor his older daughter, Etta Jones Daly. She was born on September 6, 2012, so he inked a picture of a woman warrior on his right forearm to represent her Virgo astrology sign. "It looks like Wonder Woman kinda," he said on Feherty. There's also a Statue of Liberty next to it.

    10. The Crab

The crab by his ankle is surprisingly a cover-up of the name of one of his ex-girlfriends (Jennifer Love Hewitt). He was getting another tat at the time, and the host asked his tattoo artist if they would come up with a way to black out her name. "My tattoo artist had an idea, so I let him do whatever he wanted," he told Today. "My leg was up so I couldn't see it and an hour later when I finally looked at my leg, I asked him what it was. He said, 'It's a crab claw coming out of a pocket knife,' and I just said 'Perfect, thanks!'"
