  • Prince Harry and Winfrey have shared their own stories with mental health and seek to end the stigma around it with this docuseries.

Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry are known for their commitment to philanthropy and helping others. So it's no surprise that the two are joining forces to spark a conversation about mental health with a new multi-part documentary, set to launch on Apple TV in 2020.

The Duke of Sussex shared more details about the documentary on Instagram today, stating that the goal of the mental health docuseries is to inspire people to "have an honest conversation about the challenges each of us faces, and how to equip ourselves with the tools to not simply survive, but thrive."

Prince Harry is no stranger to the struggles of mental health and previously opened up about his own personal experience. In 2017, Prince Harry launched Heads Together, an initiative through The Royal Foundation that aims to tackle the stigma around mental health.

"I truly believe that good mental health—mental fitness—is the key to powerful leadership, productive communities and a purpose-driven self," Prince Harry continued. "Our hope is that this series will be positive, enlightening and inclusive—sharing global stories of unparalleled human spirit fighting back from the darkest places, and the opportunity for us to understand ourselves and those around us better."

Winfrey revealed on CBS This Morning that she asked Prince Harry what were the most important issues facing the world. "He said there were two. He said climate change and he said mental wellness, mental fitness, mental, health," Winfrey said. She then shared with the Duke of Sussex that she was working on a new series about mental health on Apple TV and asked if he wanted to get involved.

"He said at the end of the conversation 'if there is anything I can do to help...'" Winfrey said. The duo had secret meetings in London to put the project together.

"Our hope is that it will have an impact on reducing the stigma and allowing people to know that they are not alone, allowing people to speak up about it and being able to identify it for themselves and in their friends," Winfrey adds.

Winfrey has advocated for mental health and wellness through her SuperSoul Conversations, which features interviews with thought leaders in the health field that have inspired others to be their best selves. She has also shared how many close to her have been diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia.

"Hope we shed a lot of light. And change some lives!" Winfrey commented on Prince Harry's Instagram post. We hope so too, and we can't wait to watch!
